Commenter: You mention artificial sweeteners are a problem, yet your father restarted his fatloss with the slow carb diet by using Myoplex, yet Myoplex (both original and lite varieties) contain Maltodextrin (= sweetener) and Fructooligosaccharides (= like fructose). Tim: My dad used an imperfect product for convenience. Better still would be unflavored whey protein. Almost all vegetarian protein powders will screw you one way or another. Sad but true.
